The Solution to the Problem of Anxiety

Someone said that worry is a fast getaway on a wooden horse, but we do want to get away – we do want to get somewhere out of the despair and the things that install anxiety within us. So how do we do it? I want to start out this evening by saying first of all I think:

  1. We need to understand the Problem

    It has three main elements:
    (i) Insecurity – we say to ourselves, something bad is going to happen,
(ii) helplessness – we say to ourselves, there’s nothing I can do about it, and
(iii) isolation – we say to ourselves, there’s no one to help me.
  2. How do we overcome the Problem?

    a. Trust in God

    b. We have the Greatest Help that exists

    c. God is always at our side

  3. Practical Steps

    (i) Read your Bible.

    (ii) Be realistic about life.

    (iii) Be flexible in life.

(iv) Focus on the good cares, minimize the unnecessary cares.

    (v) Learn to live one day at a time.

    (vi) Stay busy.

The wise men of the past taught us that our souls are contaminated by three things:
    a. Passion.
    b. Triviality.
    c. Discontent.

(vii) Learn contentment in this world.

Beloved, the anxious for nothing but in everything by prayer and supplication let your requests be made known to God and the God of peace will be with you.
