35 Building on the Rock

Principles from the Sermon on the Mount.

Matthew 7:24–27
“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” (ESV)

Introduction.
The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7) is Christ’s blueprint for a life that honors God and withstands the storms of life.
Jesus presents us with a choice: to build on the unshakable rock of His words or the shifting sands of human self-reliance.
We will explore the principles of Christ’s sermon that together form the rock-solid foundation of a wise builder. These principles do not only reveal the heart of the Kingdom of God but also offer practical guidance for living faithfully in a broken world.

What are these principles?
1. Humility and Dependence on God (Matthew 5:3-6).
2. Pursuit of Righteousness (Matthew 5:6, 10).
3. Love and Mercy (Matthew 5:7, 43-48).
4. Purity of Heart and Integrity (Matthew 5:8, 27-37).
5. Reconciliation and Peacemaking (Matthew 5:9, 21-26).
6. Trust in God’s Provision (Matthew 6:25-34).
7. Prayerful Dependence (Matthew 6:5-15, 7:7-11).
8. Obedience to God’s Word (Matthew 7:21-23).
9. Discernment and Holiness (Matthew 7:1-6, 13-20).
10. Kingdom Priorities (Matthew 6:19-24).
