01 Solus Christus – The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ

Key Texts:
Colossians 1:15–20; Acts 4:12; 1 Timothy 2:5

Theme:
Christ alone is the sufficient and supreme Mediator between God and man. He is the heart of the Gospel.

1. Christ Alone as the Image of the Invisible God (Col. 1:15)

1.1 The Perfect Revelation of God
     Christ is not merely a reflection of divine glory;
He is the glory of God incarnate (John 1:14)

1.2 The Rejection of False Mediators
“There is salvation in no one else.” — Acts 4:12

2. Christ Alone as Creator and Sustainer (Col. 1:16–17)

2.1 Christ the Creator
“By Him all things were created.” Not some, not spiritual only, but all things.
He is not creature but Creator.
“…without Him was not any thing made that was made.” – John 1:3

2.2 Christ the Sustainer
“He upholds the universe by the word of His power.” – Hebrews 1:3

3. Christ Alone as Head of the Church and Reconciler (Col. 1:18–20)

3.1 Christ the Head of the Church
“My sheep hear My voice… and they follow Me.” – John 10:27

3.2 Christ the Reconciler
“By a single offering He has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.”
– Hebrews 10:14

4. Christ Alone as our Only Mediator

“For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” – 1 Timothy 2:5

4.1 The Necessity of a Mediator
“Christ has entered… into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf.” – Hebrews 9:24
Christ Alone as Our Only Mediator (1 Timothy 2:5)

4.2 The Reformation Break with False Mediators

4.2.1      Illustration: Christ the Fragrant Mediator
4.2.1.1 The Symbolism of Myrrh and its Fulfilment in Christ
     Myrrh in the Old Testament
     a. Myrrh, a fragrant resin, was used for:
        (i) Anointing oil (Exodus 30:23)
       (ii) Incense (Exodus 30:34)
      (iii) Burial preparation (John 19:39)
      (iv) Love imagery (Song 1:13)
     b. Myrrh in the Life of Christ:
       (i) At His Birth – The Magi offered myrrh (Matthew 2:11), foretelling His death
(ii) At His Crucifixion – He refused wine mixed with myrrh (Mark 15:23),
choosing full suffering
(iii) At His Burial – Nicodemus used myrrh and aloes (John 19:39)
4.2.1.2 Myrrh and the Church
“For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the Church, His body, and is Himself its Savior.” – Ephesians 5:23
“We are the aroma of Christ.” – 2 Cor. 2:15

Illustration: The Fragrance of Christ
When Mary anointed Jesus, “the house was filled with the fragrance” (John 12:3).
So too, when the Church cherishes Christ crucified, the fragrance of grace fills the world.

5. Christ Alone as the Only Name for Salvation (Acts 4:12)

5.1 The Exclusivity of Salvation in Christ
Pluralism says, “All paths lead to God.” Scripture answers: “I am the way, and the truth,
and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” – John 14:6
The cross proves there is only one way of grace.

5.2 The Sufficiency of Christ’s Work
Christ’s work is both necessary and sufficient. Nothing can be added.
“It is finished.” – John 19:30
“He is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through Him.
– Hebrews 7:25

Beware of Subtle Self-Reliance.
Solus Christus calls us to rest wholly in Christ, not partly in ourselves.

6. Living under Christ’s Lordship and Sufficiency

6.1 In Worship
True worship is Christ-centered, not man-centered
The Reformers stripped away idols and relics so Christ alone would be exalted

6.2 In Prayer
“Through Him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.” – Ephesians 2:18

6.3 In Ministry
“Him we proclaim … that we may present everyone mature in Christ.” – Colossians 1:28

6.4 In Suffering
The same Christ who upholds galaxies upholds your soul.

6.5 In Assurance
“Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died.” – Romans 8:34

Conclusion: The Glory of Christ Alone

Solus Christus is not a relic of history but the anthem of eternity.
“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain.” – Revelation 5:12
He is the Image of God, Creator, Sustainer, Head, Reconciler, Mediator, and Savior.

Beloved, anchor your life in Him. Treasure Christ as your “bundle of myrrh”
