Philippians 4:4-9
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. (ESV)
1. Pray Right (v. 6)
1.1 With Supplication.
1.2. With Thanksgiving.
1.3 With Petition and Intercession (“requests”, v.6).
Pray right in Christ our High Priest who intercedes for us. This brings the peace of God, which no-one can understand, which guards our hearts and minds.
2. Think Right (v. 8)
Fill the mind and heart with the things of:
2.1 Truth – Things that are true.
2.2 Justice – Things that are honourable, just, commendable.
2.3 Beauty – Things that are pure, lovely, excellent.
Think about these Gospel glories revealed and fulfilled by Christ our prophet. This brings the peace of God that transcends human understanding.
3. Live Right (v. 9)
3.1 What we have learned and heard (the prophetic).
3.2 What we have received (the priestly – the Gospel, see 1 Corinthians 15:3 – “For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received…” where Paul tells what we have received from him).
3.3 What we have seen (the Kingly- trust and obedience).
Living the Gospel in trust and obedience, brings us in the presence of the God of peace.
