Two Special Works of the Holy Spirit in Believers

John 14:15-17

“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. You know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you…” (ESV)

Two special ways in which God the Holy Spirit works in believers:

  1. As Helper
God has provided the Holy Spirit to enable us to keep His commandments.
As believers we have His presence with and in us, and He will be with us forever.
As Christians we are not orphans and not alone.
The word Helper means that He is the Comforter.
In terms of a court case, He is our Advocate.

As our Counselor He helps us to:
    a. obey God’s complete Word – even also the Old Testament,
    b. resist temptations,
    c. grow in holiness,
    d. serve the Lord in witness and duty, and
    e. endure persecution and difficulty.

We will face the world with courage if we know that He as our Helper is with us.

  2. As Fountain (John 7:37-39)
As I come to Jesus when I’m spiritually thirsty and I drink, He quenches my thirst.
The fountain produces rivers of water.
Jesus was glorified in His crucifixion, Resurrection and Ascension, after which the Holy Spirit was given.
Rivers of Living Water is life giving and abundant, being productive like the womb of a pregnant woman, giving life also to others.

Let us pray that the Holy Spirit will be our Helper working in us and our Fountain working through us to touch the lives of others by our witness and proclamation of the Gospel.
