Psalm 139
King David experienced many challenges, as we do in our day and age – like abortionists who mess up God’s weaving in the wombs of expecting mothers.
We see the following in this Psalm:
- David’s Praise
He praises:
a) God’s Omniscience (vv 1-6)
He knows everything and observes where you’re going and what you’re doing (what’s driving you and what is the end of your motives, changing your person, plan and purpose). God doesn’t only know these things, but searches them out.
We should always ask what God is seeing, not how we are hiding our actions from humans.
We need to ask about everything that we say or do is whether it is from God, the flesh or the devil. Are our corporate thoughts and actions from God? Who is ruling the home? It’s wrong for women to rule the home. Men must lovingly lead. The Bible’s high standard reminds us why we are not good enough not to be Christians. The problem with the world is that too many people get what they want without checking their motives.
When it comes to the flesh Christians should act counter-intuitively (against the desires of the flesh). We need to think God’s thoughts after Him.
If you blame others, you’re just fooling yourself – it’s you who must change.
Does your life show that you believe what is written in Prov. 15:3 and Heb. 4:13?
You are going to have to give an account of your actions – are you ready?
b) God’s Omnipresence (vv 7-12)
He is present everywhere, filling heaven and earth. Even the darkness is not dark to God. Compared to Him we are kind of stupid, which is a serious problem. We can’t protect ourselves – we need the power of God, to whom the darkness is bright as the day. Jeremiah says in Jer. 23:24: “Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the LORD. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the LORD.”
In Acts 7:17-27: He is not far from each one of us. That’s the sentiment that David is experiencing – it doesn’t matter whether I’m in a good or a bad time, God is not far from me. And “in Him we live and move and have our being.”
c) God’s Omnipotence
(i) His wonderful weaving (vv 13-14a)
What are we doing with God’s weaving?
Many of the world’s slogans is what people want to believe – those things they haven’t searched but God has. The motive and end driving abortion is evil in God’s sight.
In Gen. 1:27 we read that God created us in His image, male and female.
To you and me it’s a fact that humans are a creation of God – we’re special in that there’s an imprint of the Divine image upon us. Some would reduce us to the status of mere animals, but they shouldn’t, because animals don’t kill for the sheer pleasure of it. We are fallen homo sapiens, and here in the text of Ps. 139 we understand that the process of our development in the womb did not escape the notice of God, who knows about it before it happens! What do you do with that, abortionists?
In the New Testament we find an interesting word for baby in Luke 18:15, where they even brought infants (babies) to Him that He might touch them. In Luke 1:41 we read that “when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby (John the Baptist) leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit”. In both cases the word for baby is brephos, which refers to both pre-born as well as post-born life.
The Bible calls a ‘foetus’ in the womb of its mother a baby – not a foetus! The world says that humans only become babies when they are born – before that an embryo and then a foetus. In all these stages you are already a human life, and yet the pro-abortionists, with few exceptions, are against the death-penalty for murderers! What is abortion other than evil? There are babies who would have been born next year who will never see 2024! What have we become? What’s wrong with humanity? Why are the Evangelicals so silent on this matter?
(ii) His wonderful works (v 14b-16)
David says that God wrote his unformed substance in His Book! Abortionists just takes out a pen and strikes it out. It’s not stupid or crazy – it must be evil!
Isaiah 40:26 says “Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name; by the greatness of His might and because He is strong in power, not one is missing.”, and Eph. 2:10 says “… we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works…”
We’re not going to let people tell us how to create stuff.
(iii) His wonderful wisdom (vv 17-18)
Psalm 40:5: “You have multiplied, O LORD my God, Your wondrous deeds and Your thoughts toward us; none can compare with You! I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told.” This is who the world is messing with!
God’s thoughts are higher than ours (Is. 55:8-9), His judgements unsearchable and His ways inscrutable (Rom. 11:33). - David’s Pleas
a) For God to slay the wicked, whom God abhors (Ps. 5:6 Ps. 109:2-3).
David hates and loathes God’s enemies, who destroys the diversity that God created (e.g. ethnicity) and tries to create diversity which He didn’t create (e.g. more than two sexual categories). The wicked will be punished (Ps. 95:23, Rev. 21:8).
b) For God to search the Psalmist, knowing that we His people also have it in us to think and do the things that offend Him.
The Psalmist ends by asking God to lead him in the way everlasting, which is not a thing or a plan but a Person, and His Name is Jesus Christ. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. We need to let Him search our hearts, help us embrace Life in the only way that there is: our Prophet who tells us what is right, our Priest who gives us what He earned on the cross at Calvary and our King who leads us in Love.
