Matthew 6:19-24
19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22 The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, 23 but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. (ESV)
Success in our culture is often described in terms of material possessions.
True success in God’s eyes has everything to do with where our heart is.
In order to live life right you need to:
- Set the Right Priorities (where is your Fortune?)
Jesus’ command is: ‘Do not treasure up treasures for yourself on earth.’
We believe that the one who dies with the most toys, wins. It is not true.
Jesus knew that money alone will not satisfy the human heart – that possessions don’t last, are eaten up (moth, rust and thieves). It’s futile to store it up.
He gives us a better priority – laying up treasures in heaven, which are neither consumed, nor stolen.
The question ‘Why’ has to do with your motives and your will – your heart.
We must be very careful what we give our hearts to. The Lord says we must guard our heart. - Set the Right Perspective (where is your Focus?)
Our vision is related to the attitude of the heart.
Without clarity of vision, we walk in darkness.
We must have a single focus on Christ as the Lord of our life, else we are void of understanding, and are of all people most miserable.
If we are focused on the Lord, then we will use our fortune for His kingdom. - See the Righteous Provider (your Father)
Anxiety comes from not seeing our heavenly Father.
Whoever is in control of you is your master.
Is it God or Mammon?
